Since Mazomenos (1989) identified 8% of Z11-16:Al as a component of
S. nonagrioides sex pheromone, it has never been possible to detect it directly
by Gc analyses of gland extract . As well, by gently rubbing the gland surface with SPME
fiber, Frerot et al, 1997 did not detect the aldehyde. A new method using SPME fiber to trap
volatile chemicals released by several glands kept surviving in physiological solution is
described and a new pheromone blend containing Z11-16. Al is proposed. The role of relative
vapor pressure for quantitative analyses is discussed.
